Delhi’s Power Makeover: ₹463 Crore for Underground Cables

Delhi Power Minister Ashish Sood announced that the government has approved projects worth ₹463 crore to shift high-tension (HT) and low-tension (LT) electricity lines underground across the city.

The initiative is aimed at improving safety and enhancing power reliability, particularly in residential and densely populated areas. Under the plan, overhead lines along 26 roads in Chandni Chowk will be relocated underground at a cost of ₹159.47 crore. Undergrounding work will also be carried out in 125 localities, with an estimated expenditure of ₹267.20 crore. Additionally, 15 proposals approved last year account for ₹37.63 crore. Pilot undergrounding projects have already been successfully completed in Shalimar Bagh and Janakpuri.

“The primary objective is to underground unsafe overhead electricity lines, reducing risks to human life and improving power distribution,” said Minister Sood. He further noted that the Delhi Power System Master Plan 2023, with an investment of ₹17,000 crore, will focus on upgrading the grid infrastructure to meet growing electricity demand, including that from electric vehicles.
