The Tamil Nadu government has given in-principle approval for a major expansion of the Chennai Metro, with a new 21.76-kilometer line proposed between Koyambedu and Pattabiram (Outer Ring Road). According to a government order issued on April 28 by the Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Department, the estimated cost of the project is ₹9,928 crore.
In addition to the metro line, the project includes a ₹464 crore investment in road infrastructure, with plans to construct three key flyovers along the route to improve traffic flow.
The state has also approved the Detailed Project Report (DPR), which has now been forwarded to the Central government for further approvals and financial backing. The proposed funding model includes equity contributions from both the state and central governments, along with potential loans from bilateral and multilateral agencies.
This ambitious expansion aims to significantly boost public transportation and connectivity in western Chennai. By extending service to Pattabiram along the Outer Ring Road, the project is expected to benefit both residents and businesses, easing congestion and supporting regional economic growth.
