Cabinet's ₹582 Cr Splash: Water Upgrade for Bareilly & Kanpur

On 2 December 2025, the Cabinet approved two major drinking water projects for Bareilly and Kanpur under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme, with a combined investment of ₹582.74 crore.

Finance Minister Suresh Khanna announced that the projects aim to expand and upgrade drinking water infrastructure in both cities. In Bareilly, a ₹265.95 crore Phase-1 reorganisation project under the Municipal Corporation will enhance water supply for nearly nine lakh residents—covering 92% of the city’s population. The funding comprises ₹85.31 crore from the Central government, ₹145.05 crore from the state government, and ₹25.60 crore as the municipal contribution.

For Kanpur, a ₹316.79 crore pipeline expansion project will deliver clean drinking water to the East and South zones of the Kanpur Municipal Corporation, benefiting 33 wards. This project also includes contributions from the Central, state, and local authorities. “This initiative will ensure clean drinking water for these areas, improving the quality of life for thousands,” Minister Khanna said.
