The Highways Department has commenced work to widen a 2.5 km stretch of Sardar Patel Road, from IIT Madras to Chellammal College on GST Road, with an estimated budget of ₹48 crore.
The project will expand the road from four lanes to six, including service lanes and footpaths on both sides, aiming to ease traffic congestion between Taluk Office junction and Chellammal College. A 500-meter section has already been widened as part of the Madhya Kailash flyover project. Compound walls of institutions such as Anna University and the Highways Research Station will be shifted inward, while the Raj Bhavan, located within a national park, will remain unaffected. The widening will proceed to the right side of the road, beginning just after the Raj Bhavan.
The project also includes constructing footpaths along storm-water drains to direct water towards the Research Station and ultimately the Buckingham Canal. Approved in September 2025, this initiative is set to improve both traffic flow and drainage in the area.
