Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has approached the Government of Maharashtra to secure 27,967 sq. m of reserved land for expanding the Worli Sewage Treatment Plant, citing the need for additional space to support future infrastructure. The civic body has sought a revision of a July 2024 government order that reduced the reservation area to 17,756.40 sq. m, stating that the revised allocation is inadequate.
The land lies within a proposed special township tied to slum rehabilitation projects in Lower Parel, including Jijamata Nagar, Shree Vivekanand Nagar, Veer Jijamata Nagar, and Mata Ramabai Nagar. The BMC has stressed that the land is critical not only for sewage treatment expansion but also for safeguarding underground utilities and ensuring maintenance access.
A significant portion of the land—over 21,900 sq. m—is required for the Mumbai Sewage Disposal Project, which aims to upgrade the Worli facility into a 500 MLD wastewater treatment plant capable of producing higher-quality treated water. Additional space is also needed for stormwater drainage works, bridge maintenance, and utility protection.
The civic body has urged the state to amend the earlier order under the Maharashtra Slum Areas Act, highlighting the expansion as a critical public infrastructure initiative for strengthening Mumbai’s sanitation system.
