Bihar’s Nuclear Leap: NTPC Eyes ₹25,000 Crore Project in Banka

State-owned NTPC is considering setting up two nuclear power units of 700 MW each in Bihar’s Banka district, as part of its strategy to diversify its energy portfolio. The proposed project could involve an investment of approximately ₹25,000 crore.

A government official indicated that NTPC has begun a feasibility study for the project, which is planned around 250 km from Patna. The study will evaluate technical, environmental, and logistical factors before any final decision is made.

The Bihar government has extended its full support, including assurances regarding water availability, a critical requirement for nuclear power generation. Early estimates suggest that around 1,000 acres of land may be required for the project.

If approved and executed, the initiative would represent a key move by NTPC to reduce reliance on thermal power and strengthen its footprint in the nuclear energy sector.
