A New Era for Assam Dairy: Purabi Plant Set for ₹104 Cr Boost

On 20 July 2025, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma performed the ‘Bhoomi Pujan’ for the ₹104 crore expansion of the Panjabari dairy plant operated by the West Assam Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union Ltd. (WAMUL), under the Purabi Dairy brand.

The expansion will double the plant’s processing capacity from 1.5 lakh litres per day (LLPD) to 3 LLPD, significantly enhancing Assam’s formal dairy sector. The project is being implemented under an MoU between WAMUL and the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and will include new product lines such as pasteurised milk, ice cream, and other dairy products.

As the largest dairy facility in the North East, the Panjabari plant plays a pivotal role in the Assam Dairy Development Plan (ADDP), which aims to achieve a statewide milk processing capacity of 10 LLPD. Post-expansion, pasteurised milk output will increase from 1.15 LLPD to 2.0 LLPD, while the plant will introduce a 20 tonnes per day (TLPD) ice cream line, scalable to 30 TLPD, along with an additional 70 TLPD capacity for other dairy products.

To further support dairy farmers and strengthen the rural economy, the Chief Minister also launched a ₹5-per-litre milk subsidy scheme, aimed at benefiting over 20,000 dairy farmers across Assam. The announcement was made during a public programme held in Guwahati.
