A New Dawn for Pashan Lake: State-of-the-Art STP Complete

A long-awaited sewage treatment plant (STP), constructed between Bavdhan and Pashan to address pollution in Pashan Lake, is now complete and awaiting formal inauguration. The plant has a treatment capacity of 1 million litres per day (MLD) and employs advanced Integrated Fixed Film Activated Sludge (IFAS) technology to ensure wastewater is treated before entering the lake ecosystem.

For years, residents and environmental activists raised concerns about untreated sewage from Bhugaon to Bavdhan flowing directly into the Ram River, significantly contributing to the degradation of Pashan Lake. This pollution led to mosquito infestations, rampant growth of water hyacinth, and a sharp decline in biodiversity and public health.

Launched in 2023 under the 15th Finance Commission with a budget of ₹5.5 crore, the project included repairing existing sewer lines and laying a new 1,200-meter, 900 mm diameter pipeline. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) oversaw the execution.

Once operational, the STP will treat nearly 10 lakh litres of sewage daily. The treated water will be reused for gardening and construction purposes, helping to reduce the ecological footprint while supporting the restoration of the lake’s biodiversity and environmental health.
