A Lifeline Reborn: The ₹56-Crore Plan to Heal the Tamirabharani

The Corporation is preparing to launch a ₹56-crore project to protect the Tamirabharani River, a vital water source for millions of people in the southern districts and an important irrigation source for over one lakh acres of farmland in Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi.

The main objective of the project is to stop the uncontrolled discharge of sewage into the river. Although the river stretches for 128 km, about seven km passes through the Corporation limits, where sewage currently enters the river at 23 different locations. Under the project, these points will be connected to the Corporation’s underground drainage network to prevent sewage from flowing directly into the river.

The project will also include riverfront development initiatives such as planting trees, introducing small plants that help filter water naturally, renovating bathing ghats, and constructing a walking path along the riverbank. The tender process is nearing completion, and a contractor will soon be selected.

Once completed, the project is expected to eliminate sewage pollution in the river, improve water quality, and help restore the ecological health of the Tamirabharani River, benefiting both the environment and local communities.
