The government has announced plans to develop over 700 wayside amenities (WSAs) along national highways by FY29. These amenities will feature fuel stations, electric vehicle charging points, toilets, drinking water facilities, parking areas, and eateries. Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, informed the Rajya Sabha that 501 WSAs have already been awarded, with 94 currently operational.
The National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML) is overseeing the project, ensuring WSAs are spaced 40-60 km apart. A digital feedback system has been installed at these facilities to allow users to provide input for quality monitoring, according to the ministry. The development of WSAs is being carried out through private bidding, with dedicated kiosks planned to support local artisans and create employment opportunities. Additionally, village 'haats' are being incorporated as permissible facilities under the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) to promote local produce.
To ensure the upkeep of the national highway network, the government has approved short-term maintenance contracts (STMC) for 17,884 km, valued at Rs 2,842 crore, and performance-based maintenance contracts (PBMC) for 6,118 km, amounting to Rs 6,757 crore in FY25.
