ONGC Tripura Power Company (OTPC), a subsidiary of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), has partnered with Assam Power Development Corporation to jointly develop a 250 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Assam — the first of its kind in the northeastern region of India.
Described as a “warehouse” for solar energy, the system will store power generated during the day and release it during peak demand hours. This solution addresses one of the key challenges in renewable energy — ensuring a stable and reliable power supply despite the intermittent nature of solar generation.
The project is a significant step toward efficient energy management and reducing dependence on conventional energy sources during critical periods. Given the emerging nature of this technology in India, especially in the Northeast, the 250 MW facility will be developed in phases to ensure smooth implementation and allow room for operational learning. Once operational, it is expected to serve as a benchmark for renewable-integrated storage solutions across the country.
