GAIL to Power Karnataka with 1 GW Renewables

The Government of Karnataka has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with GAIL (India) to develop approximately 1 GW of renewable energy capacity in the state, supported by an investment of ₹5,000 crore.

The agreement was formalised in the presence of Minister for Large and Medium Industries and Infrastructure Development MB Patil, Minister for Energy KJ George, and KREDL Chairman T.D. Rajegowda.

MB Patil noted that GAIL can either lease land directly from farmers or receive support through the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) for land allocation. He assured that necessary approvals, registrations, and concessions would be expedited. The initiative will enable GAIL to pursue a diversified renewable portfolio—including ground-mounted, rooftop, and floating solar, wind power, and integrated energy storage solutions.

This collaboration is expected to boost Karnataka’s position as a green energy leader, create jobs, and support infrastructure development. With the success of the 2,050 MW Pavagada Solar Park and farmers offering up to 10,000 acres for similar projects, the state continues to advance its goals for sustainable industrial growth and climate resilience.
