The New Lifeline: Bridging the Gap Between Gurgaon and Jhajjar

Nayab Singh Saini announced in the Haryana state budget a proposal to build a 33-km six-lane corridor to improve connectivity between Gurgaon and Jhajjar, along with a bypass for Farrukhnagar. The new corridor will run from the Harsaru bypass on Gurgaon–Pataudi Road at Wazirpur (NH-352W) to Jhajjar (NH-352).

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) began the process in November last year to appoint a consultant to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR). The DPR will assess traffic projections, engineering requirements, land acquisition needs, environmental impact, and the project’s economic feasibility before finalising the route alignment and cost.

According to an NHAI official, the project is currently at an early stage. Bids have been invited to appoint a consultant, and the agency is expected to be finalised soon. The exact alignment of the road, the starting point of the Farrukhnagar bypass, and other technical details will be determined during the DPR stage after feasibility studies and traffic analysis.

At present, the stretch between Wazirpur and Farrukhnagar is a two-lane road that connects to the state highway at Farrukhnagar before joining NH-352. Once completed, the new corridor will provide smoother connectivity between Jhajjar and the Dwarka Expressway, linking western Haryana with Delhi via NH-352 and NH-352W and reducing dependence on the Delhi–Jaipur highway corridor.

Separately, NHAI is upgrading the 43-km Gurgaon–Pataudi–Rewari section of NH-352W at an estimated cost of ₹900 crore. Officials say the project is nearing completion and will open partially soon, with full completion expected by June.

Construction has also progressed at the Dwarka Expressway interchange, where girder launching has begun for a unidirectional flyover that will allow direct movement from Delhi towards Pataudi and Rewari. Once operational, the upgraded highway network is expected to improve travel between Gurgaon, southern Haryana, and Rajasthan while easing congestion on the Delhi–Jaipur Expressway.

The foundation stone for the Gurgaon–Pataudi–Rewari highway upgrade was laid in July 2020 by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. Although the project was initially targeted for completion by December 2022, construction began in November 2021 and faced delays due to utility shifting, regulatory approvals, and environmental concerns.

Work was halted in September 2022 after intervention by the National Green Tribunal over forest clearance issues. Petitioners argued that the proposed compensatory afforestation—planned nearly 300 km away in Panchkula—would not adequately compensate for the loss of green cover in the project area. In April 2024, the Supreme Court of India allowed NHAI to resume construction, directing that compensatory afforestation be carried out within the city to mitigate environmental impact.
