PMGSY-IV Kicks Off in J&K: ₹4,224 Crore for Rural Connectivity

In September 2024, the Union Cabinet approved the implementation of Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana – IV (PMGSY-IV) for the period 2024–25 to 2028–29. As part of Batch-I, the central government has sanctioned 316 rural road projects in Jammu and Kashmir, at an estimated cost of over Rs 4,224 crore, to connect 390 eligible habitations.

Jammu and Kashmir is the first state/UT in India to receive approval under PMGSY-IV. The sanctioned package—covering 1,781 km of road length—is the largest-ever allocation under the scheme for the region. These roads will ensure all-weather connectivity to remote and inaccessible areas, enhancing socio-economic development by linking villages to education, healthcare, and market facilities.

At the national level, PMGSY-IV has a total outlay of Rs 70,125 crore, comprising Rs 49,087.50 crore as the central share and Rs 21,037.50 crore as the state share. The scheme targets the construction of 62,500 km of roads and aims to connect 25,000 unconnected habitations across India, utilizing sustainable construction technologies and strategic alignment planning via the PM Gati Shakti portal.
