Approximately 75% of the land required for the eight-kilometre Viraganoor Ring Road–Sakkudi Road project in Madurai has been acquired, marking a significant milestone in the region’s infrastructure development.
The proposed road, which will run along the northern bank of the Vaigai River, is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 130 crore. The Tamil Nadu government had earlier issued a Government Order for land acquisition across five villages, including Vandiyur, Andarkottam, Sakkimangalam, and Sakkudi. Although three-quarters of the required land has now been secured, compensation to landowners is still pending.
A senior official from the State Highways Department confirmed that the government has allocated Rs 55 crore for land acquisition. The department is currently awaiting approval of the Detailed Project Report (DPR), after which tenders will be invited. Once administrative and technical sanctions are granted, construction will commence—from the outer road at Vandiyur and extend up to Sakkudi.
