Assam Tops Northeast in Highway Projects & Investment

Assam leads the Northeast region with the highest number of National Highway (NH) projects, attracting an investment of Rs 39,239 crore, according to official figures. It also has the longest road network under construction in the region.

Arunachal Pradesh has two NH projects spanning 815 km, with an investment of Rs 8,035 crore. States like Nagaland, Manipur, and Tripura have relatively fewer projects with shorter road lengths. The total investment in approved NH projects across the Northeast stands at Rs 43,322 crore, while ongoing construction projects are allocated Rs 87,363 crore.

In terms of budget allocation for NH development and maintenance, Assam again takes the lead with Rs 5,329 crore, followed by Arunachal Pradesh with Rs 3,488 crore. Nagaland, Manipur, and Tripura have budget allocations of Rs 1,227 crore, Rs 1,508 crore, and Rs 514 crore, respectively. The completion of these projects depends on factors such as land acquisition, environmental and forest clearances, utility shifting, and contractors’ financial stability.

All ongoing NH projects across Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, and Tripura are expected to be completed by 2028. Authorities are working to prevent delays by streamlining land acquisition, conducting regular project reviews, expediting approvals, and enhancing coordination with state governments and other stakeholders.
