Visakhapatnam's Long-Awaited Township Project Revived

After nearly 18 years of stagnation, the long-pending Cherlopalikhandam integrated township project near Anakapalli, Visakhapatnam, has been revived following the resolution of a prolonged land dispute.

Originally proposed in 2007 under the Land Pooling Scheme (LPS) by the then Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA)—now VMRDA—the project was delayed due to lack of consent for 16 out of 86 acres of the proposed site. Although draft notifications and layout plans were issued between 2010 and 2016, progress remained stalled.

The deadlock was broken after the state government approved a compensation package for the remaining landowners. Under the revised plan:

Disputed landowners will receive 1,200 sq. yards per acre (1,000 sq. yards residential + 200 sq. yards commercial)

Consenting landowners will be allotted 1,800 sq. yards per acre

VMRDA has deemed the project financially viable and views it as a strategic solution to address growing housing demand in the region. The project’s revival is expected to catalyze urban development in Visakhapatnam’s suburban growth corridors, particularly around Anakapalli.
