Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India (DFCCIL) has successfully conducted a trial run on the newly electrified double-line section between Jawaharlal Nehru Port Terminal (JNPT) and Vaitarna (New Saphale) in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
This milestone marks the completion of the entire Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC). The trial, overseen by the Managing Director and senior officials, involved operating container trains in both directions—using an electric locomotive for the down route and a diesel locomotive for the up route. Key technical and operational parameters were evaluated, including track stability, overhead electrification performance, locomotive efficiency, signalling coordination, and safe movement of rolling stock. The exercise also assessed integration between mainline and loop line operations to ensure efficient freight handling.
The development is expected to cut transit time by nearly four hours, improve asset utilisation, enhance schedule reliability, and boost freight capacity. Completion of this final section sets the stage for full-scale commercial operations, transforming logistics efficiency and strengthening India’s rail freight network.
