Rail Upgrade: India’s First 15-Car EMU Hits the Tracks

Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai, has rolled out India’s first-ever 15-car Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) rake, marking a notable advancement in the country’s suburban rail services.

At present, suburban train rakes in India typically operate with a maximum of 12 coaches. The newly introduced 15-car rake, designed for deployment in the Mumbai region, can accommodate up to 7,555 passengers, significantly enhancing capacity on one of the nation’s busiest suburban corridors.

As per an official statement, ICF intends to produce 12 such 15-car EMU rakes in the coming months, a move expected to further augment suburban rail infrastructure and improve commuter convenience through increased passenger-carrying capacity.
