Mapped Out: The Future of the Musiri–Chennai Corridor

A long-pending railway proposal to connect Musiri with Chennai has taken a step forward, with its route alignment now appearing in updated official railway maps—signalling renewed momentum after remaining in the survey stage for several years.

The proposed rail line, spanning approximately 350 km, was initially sanctioned for a preliminary survey during 2018–19 at an estimated cost of ₹88 lakh. The project is currently under traffic and feasibility assessment, while key stages such as the final location survey (FLS) and preparation of the detailed project report (DPR) are yet to commence.

As per the updated alignment, the route is expected to pass through key towns including Thuraiyur and Perambalur—the latter currently lacking direct railway connectivity. The corridor will further extend towards Chinna Salem and Kallakurichi, eventually integrating with existing and upcoming rail networks across northern Tamil Nadu.

Once implemented, the project is expected to significantly enhance regional connectivity, support economic development in underserved areas, and improve both passenger and freight movement. As it progresses to subsequent planning stages, the proposed line could play a vital role in strengthening Tamil Nadu’s rail infrastructure and bridging connectivity gaps between the central and northern regions of the state.
