Connectivity Boost for Sikkim: Melli-Dentam Rail Survey Approved

The Railway Ministry has approved the final location survey for a new 75-kilometre railway line in Sikkim, connecting Melli to Dentam via Jorethang and Legship, as announced in an official statement on 10 May 2025.

To be conducted by the Northeast Frontier Railway with an allocated budget of ₹2.25 crore, the survey marks a significant milestone in expanding rail connectivity to southern and western Sikkim. This new line is envisioned as a strategic extension of the under-construction Sivok-Rangpo railway project, slated for completion by 2027.

Melli, a key entry point to the region, is set to function as the junction for this proposed line, strengthening regional integration with the national railway network. The survey will determine the alignment, engineering specifics, and financial framework for the project—essential groundwork for its future implementation.

The railway extension is expected to drive economic development in the region, particularly benefiting towns such as Gyalshing. By improving transportation infrastructure, the project aims to boost tourism, enhance trade, and create employment opportunities, offering long-term socio-economic gains for Sikkim.

The tendering process for the survey is expected to begin soon, initiating the first phase of this much-anticipated infrastructure initiative.
