Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has appointed Balaji Railroad Systems to conduct feasibility studies for three proposed high-speed rail corridors aimed at enhancing regional connectivity between Chennai, Coimbatore, and key surrounding centres.
This initiative is part of a broader plan to establish a Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) capable of operating at speeds of 160–200 km/h or higher, significantly reducing travel time between major cities and nearby towns to 30–60 minutes. The goal is to provide a faster, more efficient alternative for commuters and intercity travelers across Tamil Nadu.
The feasibility studies will assess project scope, define technical specifications, and determine the optimal alignment for the proposed corridors. The agreement was signed by T. Archunan, Director (Projects), CMRL, and M. Robert Rajasekaran, General Manager – Projects (South), Balaji Railroad Systems, in the presence of senior CMRL officials.
These studies will form a crucial foundation for the development of the high-speed rail network, supporting strategic investment decisions and long-term infrastructure planning to boost regional mobility.
