The 51.38-km broad gauge Bairabi–Sairang railway line was officially commissioned on June 10, 2025, marking a major milestone for Mizoram. The final 33.86-km stretch from Hortoki to Sairang underwent inspection by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (Northeast Frontier Circle) between June 6 and 10, and was declared technically safe for operations.
“The railway line is technically safe now. Once approved by the Centre, train services will begin, with a formal inauguration scheduled soon,” said Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR).
Designed to traverse the region’s rugged terrain, the new line includes 32 tunnels and 35 major bridges. With its completion, Aizawl—the capital of Mizoram—receives direct rail connectivity for the first time.
The project fulfills a long-standing regional demand and is expected to significantly enhance both passenger and freight movement, promoting economic growth and improved logistics in the state.
