80% Done: Mumbai's Bullet Train Gateway at BKC Nears Completion

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project is advancing rapidly, with 80% of excavation completed at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) station site in Mumbai, according to the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL).

A key component of the project is the 21-km underground and undersea tunnel stretching from BKC to Shilphata. Of this, 16 km is being excavated using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), while the remaining 5 km employs the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). Base slab casting is underway at both ends of the BKC station, located 100 feet below ground level, while slab works have also been completed at the Vikhroli and Sawli shaft locations, which are vital for tunnel operations.

Simultaneously, construction of elevated stations in Thane, Virar, and Boisar is picking up pace, with 44 km of piers already cast. In Palghar district, excavation of seven mountain tunnels is in progress, alongside ongoing bridge construction across the Vaitarna, Ulhas, and Jagani rivers.

The ₹1.08 lakh crore project is being jointly funded by the Government of India (₹10,000 crore) and the state governments of Gujarat and Maharashtra (₹5,000 crore each), with additional funding support from Japan through a soft loan agreement.
