Supercharging UP’s Grid: The ₹26,850 Crore Meja Thermal Project

In a major boost to regional grid capacity, REC Limited and Power Finance Corporation (PFC) have entered into a ₹26,850 crore common loan agreement with Meja Urja Nigam Private Limited (MUNPL)—a 50:50 joint venture between NTPC and UPRVUNL. As the lead lender, REC will split the loan facility equally with PFC to back the ₹38,357.81 crore Stage-II development of the Meja Thermal Power Project in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. The expansion features three 800 MW ultra-supercritical units engineered to lower emissions and minimize coal consumption relative to conventional plants. By deploying this advanced infrastructure, the project aims to stabilize Uttar Pradesh's power supply and fulfill growing demand across the domestic, commercial, and agricultural sectors.
