Powering Up: India Adds 30 GW of Renewable Energy in 2025

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, announced that India has added 30 GW of renewable energy generation capacity so far in 2025, marking a significant step toward the country’s clean energy goals.

“We are optimistic of achieving between 39 GW and 43 GW of new capacity by the end of the calendar year,” the Minister stated, citing strong momentum in both solar and wind energy installations.

Between January and June 2025, India installed approximately 22 GW of solar and wind capacity, bringing the country’s total operational renewable capacity to 226 GW. Joshi emphasized that, when combined with existing operational capacity across all energy sectors, India is nearing 499 GW in total installed power capacity, keeping it firmly on track to meet the 2030 target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity.

To sustain this momentum, the government is actively working to resolve delays in power sale agreements (PSAs) and improve weather forecasting infrastructure for better grid management. Key upcoming initiatives include:

Launch of Phase II of the PM-KUSUM scheme to promote solar power in agriculture

Rollout of Phase III of the Green Energy Corridor to strengthen transmission infrastructure for renewables

These efforts reflect India’s commitment to accelerating the energy transition and ensuring a sustainable, low-carbon future.
