West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has laid the foundation stone for a ₹16,000-crore ultra-supercritical thermal power plant by JSW Energy at Salboni, Paschim Medinipur. The project marks a significant milestone in the state’s industrial and energy sector growth.
The 1,600 MW power plant—comprising two 800 MW units—is designed to be pollution-free and is expected to generate over 15,000 employment opportunities. Announced at the 8th Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS) in February 2025, the plant is backed by a 25-year power purchase agreement with the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company (WBSEDCL) and will run on domestic coal allocated under the SHAKTI B (IV) policy.
JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindal also revealed plans for a skill development centre in the region. In addition, a 2,000-acre JSW Industrial Park has been proposed near the plant site, offering plug-and-play infrastructure for future industries, with integrated renewable energy, grid connectivity, transport access, and sustainable urban planning.
