Powering Up: Solar Giants Bet Big on Battery Storage

As India rapidly expands its renewable energy capacity, solar energy companies are increasingly investing in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) manufacturing to meet the rising demand for reliable and scalable energy storage solutions.

Waaree Energies, the country’s largest solar module manufacturer, has outlined plans to achieve 20 Gigawatt Hours (GWh) of BESS capacity by FY28. The proposed capacity will include the manufacturing of battery cells, battery packs and utility-scale BESS containers.

Through its subsidiary, Waaree Energy Storage Solutions, the company has proposed an investment of ₹10,000 crore in the BESS segment, including an ₹8,000-crore battery gigafactory planned in Andhra Pradesh. Waaree expects nearly 3.5 GWh of BESS production capacity to become operational by FY27.

Meanwhile, Vikram Solar has announced plans to establish 15 GWh of BESS capacity by 2030. The Kolkata-based company will initially focus on assembling battery packs and containerised energy storage systems using externally sourced cells, while also targeting 7.5 GW of integrated battery cell manufacturing capacity over the long term.
