Odisha Mining Corporation plans to expand production capacity at the Kodingamali Bauxite Mines in Odisha from the current 3.6 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 6 MTPA in response to rising industrial demand.
The mine, operational for the past eight years across Koraput and Rayagada districts, supplies bauxite to industries within Odisha and remains an important component of the state’s industrial ecosystem. According to the company, the proposed expansion is intended to meet increasing demand from downstream sectors, particularly the aluminium industry, while also contributing to regional economic growth.
OMC stated that although a small section has opposed the project, allegedly under the influence of competing industrial interests, the broader local community has expressed strong support for the expansion. The company said more than 10,000 residents from villages surrounding the mining area have submitted formal letters backing the proposal, citing benefits such as improved education, healthcare, employment generation, drinking water facilities and road connectivity.
The corporation reiterated its commitment to sustainable mining practices, environmental safeguards and inclusive development, adding that the expansion is expected to deliver significant socio-economic benefits to local communities and the wider region.
