Modernizing Energy Hubs: 139 Projects Redefining Coal Transport

The Ministry of Coal, Government of India, has made significant progress in strengthening coal transportation infrastructure through its First Mile Connectivity (FMC) initiative.

Under the programme, 139 FMC projects have been taken up, of which 65 have already been commissioned, together enhancing coal transportation capacity by around 552 million tonnes. The initiative is aimed at modernising coal logistics, improving operational efficiency and reducing the environmental impact of coal movement across the supply chain.

The FMC projects focus on minimising road transportation to cut emissions, reducing transit delays, and improving logistics through mechanised systems. The initiative also incorporates digital monitoring for real-time tracking and greater transparency, while limiting manual handling to preserve coal quality and reduce losses during transportation.

According to the Ministry of Coal, the FMC initiative contributes to environmental protection, improved public health and India’s net-zero emission goals. The programme underscores the government’s commitment to technology-driven, sustainable coal transportation and represents a key step in modernising the country’s energy infrastructure while lowering its carbon footprint.
