The Geological Survey of India (GSI) is undertaking G2-level advanced exploration for rare earth minerals in Purulia district of West Bengal and Karbi Anglong district of Assam, according to Director General Asit Saha.
Speaking at the 3rd Minerals and Mining Conclave 2025, organized by ASSOCHAM on July 11, Saha confirmed that exploration at both sites is expected to be completed soon. While specific elements are yet to be officially identified, preliminary assessments indicate the possible presence of a “basket of 14–17 rare earth minerals,” which may pose technical challenges for extraction.
Following completion, GSI will submit its findings to the Union government and share the report with the respective states to plan next steps, including the potential auction of blocks within a year.
This initiative gains significance amid global supply chain shifts, triggered by China’s April 2025 restrictions on rare earth and magnet exports—prompting India to accelerate its critical mineral exploration efforts.
