Going Deep: Reliance and NLC to Turn Gujarat’s Lignite into Gas

NLC India Limited and Reliance Industries Limited have partnered to explore the development of an underground lignite gasification project in Gujarat, with the objective of enhancing domestic gasified fuel production and strengthening energy security.

Under a recently signed agreement, the two companies will assess the feasibility and technical viability of converting lignite reserves into gasified fuels using underground gasification technology. The initiative comes amid growing interest in alternative energy sources and efforts to reduce dependence on imported fuels.

NLC India’s two lignite blocks in Gujarat have been identified as potential sites for the project. Preliminary technical studies are currently underway, with Reliance Industries contributing its expertise in advanced gasification technologies to evaluate the project’s commercial and operational potential.
