The Union Cabinet has approved a policy to promote coal and lignite gasification projects as part of India’s efforts to reduce dependence on imported natural gas. The initiative is expected to start producing gas within the next four to five years.
Narendra Modi said in a social media post that the programme to support surface coal and lignite gasification will enhance the country’s energy security, attract investment and generate employment opportunities. He added that the initiative would also strengthen India’s technology and innovation ecosystem.
Coal gasification is a process that converts coal or lignite into synthetic gas, or syngas, which can be used as an alternative fuel source. The technology is also used in the production of methanol, fertilisers, hydrogen and chemicals, helping reduce import dependence while supporting lower carbon emissions.
