Deep Dive for Energy: OIL India Makes Waves in the KG Basin

Oil India Limited (OIL) has successfully commenced drilling its first offshore well under the Deepwater and Shallow Fields (DSF) regime in the shallow waters of the KG Basin on March 31, 2026.

The appraisal well, covering an area of 93.9 sq. km in the Bay of Bengal, is designed to evaluate known hydrocarbon reserves while also exploring additional resource potential within the block awarded under DSF Round-II. This move aligns with OIL’s broader strategy to expand its offshore exploration capabilities and deploy advanced drilling technologies for more effective resource assessment.

The project is expected to play a key role in strengthening India’s energy security by boosting domestic hydrocarbon production and reducing reliance on imports. It also supports the country’s growing energy demand through increased exploration of offshore reserves.

This milestone marks a significant advancement in OIL’s offshore operations, with the company now running three drilling rigs simultaneously in offshore regions. It highlights steady progress toward maximizing resource utilization, enhancing energy self-reliance, and reinforcing India’s presence in the offshore oil and gas sector.
