Coal India’s ₹3,300 Crore Push to Fuel India’s Steel Ambitions

Coal India is set to enhance the quality of its coking coal output with plans to establish eight new washeries at an estimated capital investment of ₹3,300 crore.

According to a recent stock exchange filing, the proposed washeries are expected to be commissioned by FY30 and will collectively add a coal washing capacity of 21.5 million tonnes per year (MT/Y). The initiative is aimed at improving the grade and usability of coking coal, a key raw material for steel production.

The new facilities will significantly augment Coal India’s existing infrastructure. At present, the company operates 10 coking coal washeries with a combined capacity of 18.35 MT/Y, and the planned expansion is expected to substantially scale up its processing capabilities.
