Black Gold, Refined: BCCL Launches Bhojudih Coking Coal Plant

Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), a subsidiary of Coal India, has commenced commercial operations at its 2 million tonne per annum (MTPA) Bhojudih coking coal washery in West Bengal, strengthening domestic coal beneficiation capacity for the steel sector.

Operational from 26 May 2026, the facility is designed to improve the supply of washed coking coal to India’s steel industry, which continues to rely significantly on imports to meet domestic requirements. The washery is a medium-capacity, three-product beneficiation plant equipped with advanced processing technologies, including heavy media cyclone systems, spiral concentrators, and froth flotation units.

Developed under the build, operate and maintain (BOM) model, the project aims to enhance coal quality and support more efficient steel production through the supply of cleaner and higher-grade coking coal. The initiative forms part of Coal India’s broader strategy to reduce import dependence and strengthen domestic coal processing infrastructure.

Coal India has also planned several additional washeries with a combined capacity exceeding 21 MTPA alongside its existing facilities. The commissioning of the Bhojudih washery represents an important milestone in expanding value-added coal processing within India’s energy and industrial ecosystem.
