Delhi's Water Minister, Parvesh Verma, recently unveiled a significant desilting project at the Wazirabad Water Treatment Plant (WTP) to increase its storage capacity, aiming to double its current capacity in just six weeks.
During an inspection of the plant, Verma highlighted that although the WTP is designed to handle 220 million gallons per day (MGD), a one-kilometre stretch of accumulated silt has restricted its capacity to only about 100 MGD. He assured that desilting work is underway and, once completed, the plant will function at its full capacity.
To further emphasize the quality of the water, Verma drank treated water from the plant and confirmed that it is safe and potable. He also noted that the total dissolved solids (TDS) level from the Wazirabad barrage stands at 170, well within the safe limits set by both the World Health Organization and Indian standards.
Despite Delhi's ample water supply from neighboring states, the minister stressed the importance of strengthening storage systems and preventing leaks. Verma mentioned that the government is drafting a long-term master plan for water management, focusing on the next 50 years, and is actively working on controlling ammonia levels in the Yamuna River.
In a bid to enhance transparency, Verma announced the creation of an IT dashboard to provide real-time data on water intake and discharge from all water treatment and sewage treatment plants (STPs) across the city. He also pointed out the need for regular monitoring of the 30 sewage treatment plants managed by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB).
Verma also emphasized ongoing efforts to reduce pollution and curb illegal encroachments along the Yamuna riverbank, including seeking support from the Territorial Army for enforcement.
Taking a dig at the previous Kejriwal-led government, Verma remarked, “I didn’t visit anyone’s home with a 20-litre Bisleri bottle for a photo op. I drank the same water that’s being supplied to Delhi homes. We are committed to delivering clean and safe water transparently.”
The minister concluded by stating that he will personally inspect each water treatment and sewage treatment plant in the city to ensure operational efficiency and adherence to standards.
