Barnar Reservoir: Bihar's ₹2,579 Crore Irrigation Dream Takes Flight

The Water Resources Department (WRD) of Bihar has invited bids for the construction of the Barnar Reservoir Scheme in the Jamui district on a turnkey basis. The project involves building a concrete dam measuring 285 meters in length and 74.31 meters in height.

Once operational, the reservoir will provide irrigation coverage to 22,226 hectares of agricultural land across the Somo, Jhajha, Khaira, and Gidhaur blocks. The estimated cost of the project is ₹2,579.37 crore, with a targeted completion timeline of 30 months. The deadline for bid submission is July 1, 2025.

The Barnar Reservoir project has seen a significant delay, with its origins dating back nearly five decades. Initially approved in 1975 by the Technical Advisory Committee on Irrigation and Flood Control of the former Planning Commission, the scheme was then estimated to cost ₹8.03 crore.
