Stubble to Strength: SAEL Plans 1GW Biomass Expansion

SAEL plans to expand its biomass-based power generation capacity to one gigawatt over the next five years, with a focus on projects using paddy stubble, according to Chief Executive Officer Laxit Awla.

As part of its growth strategy, the New Delhi-based company aims to extend its paddy straw-based waste-to-energy operations to additional states across India. SAEL currently operates in Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan, where it runs 11 power plants with a combined generation capacity of 165 MW powered entirely by paddy stubble.

The company is currently India’s largest producer of electricity generated from paddy straw-based biomass.

Speaking in an online interview with businessline, Awla said SAEL is evaluating expansion opportunities in states including Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh as part of its nationwide growth plans.
