Vizhinjam's ₹360-Crore Cloverleaf: Green Light Ahead?

The Kerala government is expected to make a final decision within a month on the proposed ₹360-crore cloverleaf interchange at the junction of the Vizhinjam Port approach road and National Highway 66.

The project file has been submitted to the Public Works Department (PWD), which is likely to issue the required government order soon. Once approved, Vizhinjam International Seaport Ltd. (VISL) will initiate the acquisition of approximately 30 acres for the development.

Reviewed during a high-level meeting chaired by Fisheries Special Secretary Abdul Nazar, the interchange is considered critical for ensuring seamless truck and trailer movement, especially as gateway cargo operations begin.

The cloverleaf design includes four loops—two to be constructed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the other two by Adani Vizhinjam Port Pvt. Ltd. (AVPPL). Land acquisition costs will be shared equally between the state government and NHAI. Additionally, a portion of previously allocated land for a truck terminal will be repurposed for the project.

An upcoming meeting led by the Chief Secretary will also address supporting infrastructure such as warehouses, container freight stations, and logistics parks to drive port-led industrial growth.
