Varkala’s Blue Horizon: The Akkulam–Chettuva Launch

As part of efforts to revitalise and modernise its inland waterways, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the first phase of the Akkulam–Chettuva Waterway at Chilakoor Beach Park in Varkala on February 26.

Stretching 280 kilometres across several districts, the waterway forms a crucial part of the state’s West Coast Canal Renovation Project. The initiative is designed to promote inland water transport as a sustainable alternative, enhancing cargo movement, passenger connectivity, and tourism, while contributing to regional economic development.

The event will also see the launch of the Chilakoor Tourism Project and the completion of multiple infrastructure upgrades undertaken by the Inland Navigation Department as part of the canal modernisation programme. Officials say these developments will significantly improve navigability and unlock greater tourism potential along Kerala’s waterways.
