Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin laid the foundation stone for the Knowledge City project in Tiruvallur district on January 29, 2026.
The project is envisioned as a hub for innovation, research, and knowledge creation, bringing together universities, research institutions, and industry players within a collaborative ecosystem. Sandeep Nanduri, Managing Director of the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO), the nodal agency for the initiative, said the project aims to create an integrated education and research environment.
Launched at the India Global Education Summit 2026, the Knowledge City will host campuses of eight international universities along with supporting academic and commercial infrastructure. In the first phase, TIDCO plans to develop core infrastructure across 870 acres, including academic buildings, student accommodation, stadiums, sports facilities, and commercial spaces.
A key highlight of the project is the Knowledge Tower, a 1 lakh sq. ft. plug-and-play facility designed to support foreign universities. Nanduri noted that bookings have already been received for almost all the planned facilities.
The state government is also set to sign memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with eight international universities from the US, Europe, and Australia during the India Global Education Summit 2026. These institutions will play a central role in the development and operation of the Tamil Nadu Knowledge City.
