The Gas Revolution: Essar’s Vision for India’s Energy Independence

Essar Group participated in the conference titled “Energy Security: Driving India’s Next Wave of Gas Demand,” organised by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), where senior representatives B.C. Tripathi and Maqsood Shaikh contributed to discussions on India’s evolving energy landscape.

The conference brought together industry stakeholders to deliberate on strengthening energy security amid global geopolitical uncertainties and evolving sustainability commitments. Key sessions focused on translating decarbonisation goals into actionable strategies for the oil and gas sector, while also building resilient and secure energy supply chains.

Speaking at the event, B.C. Tripathi emphasised the importance of a pragmatic, long-term approach to energy security. He noted that India is likely to remain dependent on energy imports in the near term, while gradually diversifying sourcing to reduce reliance on specific regions. He also highlighted the need for policy alignment, infrastructure development, and increased investment in emerging energy segments such as green hydrogen.

Maqsood Shaikh highlighted the critical role of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a transition fuel in decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors, including steel, cement, and infrastructure. He further outlined Essar’s integrated approach, which leverages LNG-powered logistics and city gas distribution networks to lower emissions, strengthen last-mile energy access, and support sustainable industrial growth.
