The Directorate of Municipal Administration has granted administrative sanction for the construction of five new waste transfer stations in Tambaram, Tamil Nadu, as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) 2.0. The initiative aims to modernise and streamline solid waste management in the fast-growing municipal corporation.
With a combined handling capacity of 500 tonnes per day (TPD), the new transfer stations are expected to significantly reduce indiscriminate dumping and improve efficiency in waste transportation. These facilities will act as intermediate hubs where waste is consolidated before being transported to processing or disposal sites—optimising logistics and lowering transport costs.
The proposed locations and capacities are: TVK Nagar – 50 TPD (₹3.34 crore), Madambakkam – 150 TPD (₹9.77 crore)
Mangalagiri – 150 TPD (₹9.78 crore), Kannadapalayam – 150 TPD (₹8.13 crore), Zone 2 – Capacity unspecified (₹2.58 crore; funded by TCMC)
The total project cost is estimated at ₹31.6 crore, funded through a cost-sharing model: 33% by the Central government, 22% by the state, and 45% by the urban local body.
The project received approval from the State High Powered Committee (SHPC) in November 2022, with instructions to begin implementation promptly and ensure full documentation throughout the process.
