Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has launched a transformative ₹3,716.10 crore initiative under the Integrated Urban Regeneration and Water Transport System (IURWTS) to revitalize six of Kochi’s historic canals. This ambitious project aims to convert these waterways into vibrant corridors for water-based transport, tourism, and urban recreation.
With the Kerala state government's approval, the project marks a significant shift in how the city interacts with its natural water networks. The targeted canals—Kochi-Perandoor, Chilavannur, Edappally, Thevara, Konthuruthy, and Market Canal—will be deepened, widened to a minimum of 16.5 meters, and enhanced with landscaped walkways and green spaces. Beyond restoring the ecological health of these canals, the initiative also envisions creating accessible public spaces that promote wellness and urban living.
A central feature of the project is the introduction of regular boat services along the Edappally and Chilavannur Canals. The 11.5-km stretch between Muttar and Chitrapuzha will operate a fleet of 10 specially designed boats, running every 30 minutes and capable of navigating under existing bridges with a clearance of 3.5 meters. This service is expected to significantly enhance urban mobility and intermodal connectivity.
Additionally, the Vyttila-Thevara Water Metro route will be seamlessly linked to the Elamkulam Metro Station via the upgraded Chilavannur Canal, enabling smooth integration between water and metro transport. Plans also include the development of a new waterfront promenade along this canal, inspired by Kochi’s iconic Marine Drive, complete with water sports facilities and recreational zones.
