Defence Minister Rajnath Singh laid the foundation stone for a new naval systems manufacturing facility of Bharat Dynamics Limited at T. Sirasapalli village in Anakapalli district, Andhra Pradesh, on May 15. The project involves an investment of around ₹500 crore.
The facility is aimed at strengthening India’s indigenous underwater warfare capabilities and reducing dependence on imported naval defence systems. Spread across nearly 160 acres, the complex will include advanced assembly and integration infrastructure, explosive handling and storage units, testing systems and specialised acoustic tank facilities.
Expected to be completed within four years, the plant will manufacture advanced underwater weapon systems, torpedoes, sea mines and related naval combat equipment to support the operational requirements of the Indian Navy.
The new unit is also expected to enhance BDL’s ability to undertake multiple large-scale defence projects simultaneously while enabling closer collaboration with nearby Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) laboratories and naval establishments in the Visakhapatnam region. In addition, the project is projected to create around 3,000 direct and indirect jobs and support the growth of local MSMEs and ancillary industries in Andhra Pradesh.
