Delhi's Green Leap: MCD's Mega Waste Management Contracts

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is preparing to engage new waste management agencies for its West, South, and Central zones through contracts proposed for a seven-year tenure. This initiative aims to enhance municipal solid waste collection, domestic hazardous waste handling, and sanitation services across these regions.

Following anticipatory approval by MCD’s deliberative wing for a six-month concessionaire contract in the Central zone—where the current contractor’s third extension is nearing completion—the proposal will soon be presented in the upcoming house meeting for administrative approval and expenditure sanction. Subsequently, it will be forwarded to the standing committee for finalisation. The West Zone contract is set to expire in June 2025, while the South Zone contract may be extended until April 2026, with interim extensions provided until new agencies are appointed.

The estimated project costs are Rs 1,123 crore for the West Zone, Rs 1,170 crore for the South Zone, and Rs 932.5 crore for the Central Zone. The initiative will be implemented under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model following a Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) framework.
