Bombay High Court Gets a Grand Redesign by Hafeez Contractor

Renowned architect Hafeez Contractor has been appointed by the Maharashtra government to design the upcoming Bombay High Court complex in Bandra East. His selection follows an architectural competition, after the judiciary rejected an earlier design submitted by the Public Works Department (PWD).

The new complex will be constructed on approximately 30 acres of government land in Kherwadi, Bandra East. Former Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, laid the foundation stone in September 2024.

The proposed facility will feature 75 courtrooms, judges' residences, staff housing, an arbitration and mediation centre, a library, an auditorium, and various modern amenities. It aims to ease the burden on the historic Fort campus, originally built for 15 judges but now accommodating 29 courts and 35 judges. The sanctioned strength has since expanded to 94.

The remaining 60 acres of the 90-acre government colony will be redeveloped with 10 high-rise buildings, replacing outdated structures built between 1958 and 1973.
