The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is developing a unique, traditional-style convention facility at Baansera Park in Sarai Kale Khan, modeled after the iconic wooden houseboats of Dal Lake. Though inspired by floating houseboats, this structure will be permanently anchored to the ground and serve as a public meeting and convention space.
Standing 8.8 meters tall, the multi-level houseboat will feature ground, lower, middle, and upper decks. Facilities will include a 15-person meeting room, a waiting lounge, pantry and dining areas, and a gallery space—all adorned with Kashmiri design elements such as intricately carved jali screens and wooden railings.
The structure will be a testament to traditional craftsmanship, with master artisans crafting every detail. Persian-style woodwork will define the interiors, using a combination of woods: deodar for the foundation, cedar for the superstructure and windows, chinar wood for interior paneling, and walnut for detailed carvings. Signature architectural features like mehrab arches and hand-carved sash windows will be entirely handcrafted.
Durability and safety are key priorities. The houseboat will use seasoned wood to prevent warping, fire-resistant boards for walls, engineered wood for doors, and ceramic tiles for backsplash areas.
Championed by Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, the project aims to enrich the Yamuna floodplain with cultural and aesthetic value. Completion is targeted within three to four months, with the structure designed to last up to 50 years.
