On January 30, Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched a ₹692 crore project for the restoration and rejuvenation of 15 wetlands across Assam.
The wetlands were identified following a scientific assessment by the Space Applications Centre, which analysed flood patterns and water flow in the region. The project aims to mitigate the impact of annual floods by diverting excess water from the Brahmaputra River into these wetlands, enabling more effective flood management. Emphasising the river’s significance, Shah noted that the Brahmaputra is not only central to Assam’s culture and economy but also the lifeline of its farming community.
Beyond flood control, the initiative is expected to deliver economic benefits by supporting irrigation and allowing farmers to cultivate crops up to three times a year. The project also highlights potential opportunities in animal husbandry, dairy farming, and tourism, which could create new livelihood avenues for the people of Assam.
